The UK MGA market continues to grow, but the environment in which MGAs operate is becoming increasingly challenging.
Softening rates, rising competition and changing broker expectations mean that success is no longer defined by growth alone. Instead, sustainable profitability, underwriting discipline and operational efficiency are becoming increasingly important.
These themes formed the basis of Insurance DataLab’s recent webinar, The New Rules of MGA Success, featuring representatives from the Managing General Agents’ Association (MGAA), Euna Underwriting, MPR Underwriting and Stella. The discussion explored the factors shaping today’s MGA market and what separates the highest-performing businesses from the rest.

Sustainable growth is replacing growth at all costs
One of the strongest messages from the discussion was that the market has entered a new phase of maturity.
While MGAs continue to grow and play an increasingly important role within the insurance market, panellists agreed that success is now measured by much more than premium growth.
Insurance DataLab’s latest MGA Performance Report highlighted this shift. Although aggregate revenue across the market increased by 8% over the past year, growth has slowed as market conditions have softened. At the same time, productivity has remained strong, suggesting many MGAs are becoming more efficient and better positioned for long-term success.
Several panellists noted that maintaining underwriting discipline, protecting profitability and investing in operational efficiency are becoming more important than chasing market share during softer market conditions.
Service continues to be the MGA’s greatest competitive advantage
While technology and data are changing how businesses operate, the panel agreed that exceptional service remains one of the defining strengths of the MGA sector.
Access to experienced underwriters, quick decision-making and close relationships with brokers continue to differentiate MGAs from many larger insurers. Rather than simply providing access to specialist products, brokers increasingly expect MGAs to offer expertise, responsiveness and consistent service throughout the trading relationship.
Several speakers also noted that brokers are becoming more selective when choosing partners, placing greater emphasis on long-term stability, strong capacity relationships and demonstrable value.
Technology should enhance people, not replace them
Technology and artificial intelligence featured prominently throughout the discussion, but there was broad agreement that the greatest opportunities lie in supporting underwriters rather than replacing them.
Many MGAs are now using AI to automate repetitive tasks, improve access to data and accelerate decision-making, allowing experienced underwriting teams to focus on the areas where human judgement delivers the greatest value.
Rather than viewing technology as a replacement for expertise, panellists described it as a way of improving productivity, enhancing service and helping businesses scale more effectively.
Data is becoming a strategic advantage
The webinar also highlighted the growing role that data and benchmarking are playing across the MGA market.
Performance data is increasingly being used not simply for reporting, but to support strategic decision-making, strengthen discussions with capacity providers and demonstrate value to brokers.
As expectations around governance and performance continue to evolve, firms are looking beyond their own internal results and increasingly asking how they compare with the wider market. Independent benchmarking is becoming an increasingly important tool for understanding relative performance and identifying opportunities for improvement.
