New figures from the Official Injury Claim (OIC) Portal show a modest increase in total claims for June 2025, with 19,868 cases submitted – up 2.5% on the same month last year.
The uptick has been driven largely by represented claimants, with a 3.3% rise in represented cases, while unrepresented claims dipped slightly by 2.8%.
While whiplash continues to dominate as the most common claim type, the biggest year-on-year growth came from psychological injuries, with claims involving both physical and psychological injuries (excluding whiplash) rising by 34.6%.
Meanwhile, claims citing whiplash with a psychological element rose by 13.6%, outpacing increases in both pure whiplash (+1.5%) and whiplash with physical injuries (+3.1%).
Despite the overall increase in claims volumes, the latest data also shows a softening in average compensation values across most claim types.
Represented claimants saw their average tariff settlement fall from £791 in June 2024 to £746 this year – a drop of 5.7%. Unrepresented claimants also received less on average, with their tariff payouts declining by 12.0% to £709.
Non-tariff injuries followed a similar trend. Represented claims settled outside the tariff framework dropped by 0.6%, with the average payout falling to £1,154.
The only exception was among unrepresented non-tariff claims, where average compensation rose by 8.8% to £1,100.
These shifting dynamics point to a market in transition. As average payouts fall and claim profiles become more complex, insurers may need to adapt their assessment and settlement strategies to reflect changing claimant behaviours.
