Aviva has reclaimed its crown as the largest insurer in UKGI after leapfrogging AXA to claim top spot in the Insurance Times Top 50 Insurers 2024.
This year’s report, available to Insurance Times subscribers here, continues to feature insurers from the UK and Gibraltar, alongside Lloyd’s syndicates, and Insurance DataLab has once again provided premium and underwriting data for each of the 50 insurance groups included.
Insurance DataLab subscribers can also access the report via our market intelligence platform.

Aviva climbed to the top after reporting a 23% increase in gross written premium, fuelled by the acquisition of Lloyd’s insurer Probitas as it returned to the London market.
In addition to ranking the 50 largest insurance groups by GWP, the report also features the Insurance DataLab Underwriting Ratings and a detailed analysis of this year’s Gold Award winners for the UK, Gibraltar, and Lloyd’s syndicates.
Our co-founder, Matt Scott, edited the supplement and provides further insights into the underwriting performance of non-Lloyd’s insurers, comparing how the larger players measured up against those lower in the Top 50, as well as the broader insurance market beyond these top firms.
Matt also explores the contrasting fortunes of personal and commercial lines insurers, noting how rising claims inflation remains a persistent challenge, particularly in personal lines.
While the Insurance Times report covers the 50 biggest general insurers in the UK and Gibraltar, our digital insight platform includes underwriting and solvency information on every insurer in the market and a breakdown by business line.
